For the past 6 weeks the BBC have showing their documentary called Hospital. Following Imperial College Hospitals in London, it shows us the day to day decisions made in our hospitals and the impact on the NHS daily.
The last episode has some fabulous footage of kidney surgery as a patient undergoes life saving kidney transplant. The procedure is done with laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and shows detailed images of the kidney and the precision of the instruments in removing it. The removal of a kidney (nephrectomy) is a procedure which is also carried out when a tumour found in a kidney is too big to remove and therefore the whole kidney is removed instead.
